The African American Petteway family have contributed to local communities since being freed as Slaves from the Caucasian Petteway family of Onslow County, North Carolina.
George Washington Petteway, Freed Slave, established a joint effort between the local African American and Caucasian citizen to build a much-needed school and church for the Black community.
The Edney Freewill Primitive Baptist Church and Chapel school house was built in 1872. The schoolhouse has been in continuous operation since that time. The original church was replaced in early 1960s. it was destroyed by a Hurricane. George Washington's Grandson, Odell Petteway and family members (with support from the community) built a new church.
Many of George Washington Petteway's direct decedents served within the American military. Direct descendants, to this day, serve with distinction within their communities.
The history and heritage of the African American Petteway family is strong and respected.
